Before choosing your trail, it’s important to understand Utah’s OHV regulations. The requirements are slightly different for residents and out-of-state riders, so here’s a quick breakdown to keep you legal on the trail:

Riders under 16 without a driver’s license must complete Utah’s online OHV safety course before riding.


High Uintas Wilderness OHV Regulations


If you plan to explore the High Uintas region by OHV or on foot, it’s important to follow federal wilderness guidelines to protect this fragile alpine environment. Keep the following rules in mind when entering designated wilderness areas:
 

Group Size Limits: Groups entering the wilderness must be no larger than 14 people and 15 head of stock. Groups exceeding the size limit must separate into groups of 14 or less and remain at least one mile apart on trails and while camping.

Camping Distance: All campsites must be greater than 200 feet away from water sources, trails and other occupied campsites.

Leave No Trace: All litter must be carried out. Do not bury anything other than human waste, which should be buried in a hole at least 6 inches deep.

Campfire Restrictions: Campfires are not allowed in Naturalist Basin. Campstoves must be used for cooking in this area.

Utah OHV Permit FAQs


Do I need an OHV permit if I rent a machine?

No. Rental machines from licensed outfitters already include permits.
 

Can I ride ATVs inside Dinosaur National Monument?

No. OHVs are not allowed inside the monument, but you can ride in the surrounding BLM and state land areas.


Can kids ride or drive?
Passengers under 18 must wear helmets. Drivers must meet Utah age requirements and hold a valid license where applicable.
